Metabolic Slow Down
Your metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories to generate the energy needed to sustain life.
Signs of metabolic slow down include:
- Bloating and fluid retention
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Lack of motivation
- Diarrhoea or constipation.
Some of the factors that may cause your metabolism to slow down are:
- Digestive weakness
- Hormonal imbalance
- Heavy metal toxicity
- Mineral imbalance.
Your Registered Acupuncturist will work with you to identify and correct the factors that have caused your metabolism to slow down.
Underlying Digestive Weakness
Illness, food intolerances and yoyo dieting, among other things, may cause your digestive system to stop functioning as effectively as it could. Correcting underlying digestive weakness improves nutrient and fluid absorption in your body, which has the effect of reducing appetite and bloating.
If you are suffering from a hormonal imbalance, such as an 'underactive thyroid' or excessive oestrogen production, natural weight loss may be a challenge. You may also find that you gain weight at a rapid rate no matter how well you eat and how much exercise you do. Some people experience symptoms of hormonal imbalance even before the imbalance can be seen in a clinical test.
Your Registered Acupuncturist will talk to you about any hormonal issues that may be affecting your weight loss and tailor your program to your hormonal profile.
Heavy Metal Toxicity
A build-up of toxic metals in your body may be putting your hormonal system out of balance and preventing you from losing weight. For example, the metal cadmium, which is found in paint, mimics oestrogen in your body and may affect your capacity to lose weight.
Your Registered Acupuncturist will discuss with you whether testing for heavy metal toxicity is indicated, and where relevant tailor a program to chelate any toxins out of your system.
A slow metabolism that presents with fatigue and low energy may be due to deficiency in iron or a B vitamin, such as B12, or another nutritional deficiency. Your Registered Acupuncturist will work with you to identify whether your body is showing any signs of nutritional deficiency and tailor your weight loss program accordingly.
